I was introduced to Quizlet by one of my students. She was studying for my test and had created some virtual flashcards. I found that to be quite resourceful and became more interested in Quizlet and its capabilities. Quizlet is a free online tool that helps students learn and study any subject. Your free account allows you to create up to 8 classes, which makes it easier to distribute subsets to students as well as adjust your privacy settings to only allow your students access to your materials.

1. Create Study Sets for Students

Study sets are virtual flashcards that you can create to cover important material you would like your students to learn. You can also select from over 70 million study sets from Quizlet’s online bank and can enhance these subsets with images or, for all of you foreign language teachers, type using the proper diacritical symbols and punctuation marks.

2. A Variety of Activities to Help Students Learn

Once students are given access to your study sets, they can then study them by using the six activities listed below. The variety of learning activities helps accommodate different learning styles. It is important to note that these activities mainly help students recall facts. Therefore, it is imperative that you incorporate assignments that foster higher order thinking skills.

·      Flashcards presents a digital flashcard that allows students to study the information by term or definition.

·      Learn Mode gives students the definition or term and requires students to type the answer. Quizlet will inform the student as to whether their answer is correct or incorrect.

·     Test Mode allows students to take tests in the forms of written response, true or false, selected response or matching.

·      Speller is great for auditory learners and uses Quizlet’s audio feature to speak a word aloud. It then requires students to spell it correctly.

·      Scatter requires students to match a definition with its concept or picture and is perfect for the visual learners in your classroom.

·      Space Race prompts students to type the answer to a word or its definition before it crosses the entire screen. If students answer incorrectly, Quizlet will have the student retype the answer.

3. Test Mode for Teachers

Quizlet allows you to print tests based on the subsets you have created or selected. You can randomize the questions and even choose the format in which you want the questions presented on the test. This feature can help you gauge your students’ progress in class and prevents you from having to create quizzes or exams from scratch. You could even use them as tickets out the door or formative assessments. Make sure you incorporate other higher order thinking questions and tasks.

4. Students Can Track Their Progress

As students interact and study on Quizlet, its program keeps track of their progress as well as their high scores. In addition, Quizlet has a “Most Missed” feature which informs students of questions they regularly missed and need to focus on more. It is important to note that the ability to track student progress is not a feature available to teachers using the free account. However, it is available for students and makes them responsible for their own learning by helping them pinpoint problem areas and adjust their study habits to improve their scores.

5. Compatible with Multiple Devices Including Google Classroom

Quizlet is available on both Apple and Android devices as well as on the web. You can also link the classes you create in Quizlet to your Google Classroom, which makes access to your subsets simple and convenient. Lastly, you can embed Quizlet on your website and on Edmodo.
