By now you’ve watched the premiere episode of “Downton Abbey” season 5. (If you haven’t, stop reading this post immediately and get yourself to your DVR or click on this episode link to watch the episode online right now. There are spoilers ahead!)

The first show can be summed up as bad Mary, good Thomas and a fire. Lady Mary is back to her Queen of Scandal form and she is on a mission to not just find a husband, but “try one” before she puts a ring on him. Lord Gillingham is apparently up to the challenge and plants the idea of them playing husband and wife in her head.

Meanwhile after Thomas’s attempt to reveal Baxter’s horrible and potentially job costing secret to Lady Cora backfires (Baxter beats him to it), he redeems himself with an act of heroism.

Perhaps later on he secretly thanked Edith for giving him that opportunity. A fire at “Downton” is her unintentional doing and Thomas braves the flames to rescue her.
