American Roots Special: A Portrait of Marc and Ann Savoy

American Roots Special: A Portrait of Marc and Ann Savoy illustrates the story of the revitalization of Cajun music and culture that began in the mid-1960s through the eyes of Ann and Marc Savoy, two of the culture’s most important champions. The program visits the Savoy's picturesque farm outside of Eunice, Louisiana, and captures performances of traditional Cajun music by Marc, Ann and their two sons on the family porch. The Savoys and others also comment on the explosion of this invaluable culture that was once so thoroughly disregarded. A Portrait of Marc and Ann Savoy features performances by Marc's young cousin Steve Riley and his Cajun band, the Mamou Playboys, as well as colorful footage of traditional Mardi Gras festivities in southwest Louisiana. The documentary further proves that the beauty, energy and fun of Cajun culture are unmatched in America.
